Preserving Our Heritage and Identity
As members of the Ibaha community, it is essential that we clarify an ongoing misconception regarding the roots of our language. Some scholars, including Broadwell (1991), have attempted to categorize the Guale and Yamasee languages as Muskogean, arguing that they share similarities with languages like Creek. However, this assertion is inaccurate and does not reflect the truth of our language’s origins or its current revitalization.
For generations, our people moved along the rivers and coastlines, trading knowledge and goods with others. We shaped copper, wove intricate beadwork, and carved symbols into gorgets that carried our stories far beyond our homelands. We spoke Ibaha, a language of our own, distinct from the trade languages that connected different nations. While others used Yăma for commerce and diplomacy, Ibaha was our sacred tongue—spoken in ceremony, sung in prayers, and passed from mother to child.
Historical records and linguistic evidence show that our language was far more closely related to Cusabo and Catawba than to Muskogean languages. The Chaluque, Mocama, Cusabo, and Catawba all spoke variations of this language, and it was widely used in the coastal regions. Despite outside influences, the Ibaha language persisted, passed down through generations even as it was challenged by colonization, forced assimilation, and scholarly misclassification.
Today, our language is still spoken, though it is undergoing restructuring and revitalization. The Ibaha people remain committed to preserving and strengthening it, ensuring that it continues to be a living part of our identity. While we respect the languages we have encountered and used throughout history, it is important to make clear that our language is not, nor has it ever been, Muskogean. It is uniquely Ibaha, just as our people are uniquely Ibaha.
